Europe’s 1st Coffee Farm

On the southern coast of Spain, we made a truly surprising discovery... coffee, which normally grows in places like Hawaii, Latin America, and Africa, is now growing on the European continent.

Manolo Mateos of Herradura Coffee Farm is pioneering the cultivation of coffee and other tropical crops along the temperate coastal slopes above La Herradura. Originally home to a sugar cane plantation, and more recently avocados, Manolo's 300 year-old family farm has become a champion of climate adaptation - working with nature instead of fighting against it. Partnering with a local agronomist, Manolo is identifying new crop varieties that will thrive on his land - through higher heat and drought conditions - and working to create market demand for high-quality crops that disrupt regional norms. We bought a bag of his coffee, which is roasted locally.
